Places and forms of power
intro:
I am going to talk about the notion “Places and forms of power”. First of all I would like to give a defenition of "Power". It's the ability or official capacity to exercise control or authority over others. It can be a person, a group, or a nation having great influence over people. Powers is exercised trough a variety of relationships sustained or accepted, often internalized.
Power affects more than personal relationships, it shapes larger dynamics like socialgroups, professional organizations, and gouvernment. There can be good or bad types of power. The concept " Places and forms of power" includes the differents forms of power, the submission or the opposition over the power.
We may ask ourselves : <<How can we depict the differents forms of power, in various places ? >> . I’m going to speak about the power of parents , and afterwards the power of society.
To my mind, the document that seem to best illustrate the notion are The comic strip Buddy is an illustration of The Power of Parents who wish to push their children into fast track schools.
More to the point, what I have learned is that our interactions with our parents form the crucible for our growth. Through these interactions, we learn what is good and bad, right and wrong, who we are and who we are to be. So, although your genes lay out a blueprint for your potential development, they do not determine the way in which you will grow. Instead, it is the environment your parents create that instructs and directs your genes by enhancing some and turning off others. In other words, parents are the true gene therapists. Now, as a parent yourself, the baton has passed to you. And who your baby will be and how he will grow subsequently is up to you. After all, in these critical first few years of life, your baby isn’t just building language and communication skills – he’s building his very personality. This means that your choices¬ – what you say (and don’t say), what you do (and don’t do) – strongly influence who your child becomes. You are a key co-author in the book of his life. And this is The Power of Parents !
The second document is a black and white picture taken in 1920. We can see a man who is working very hard. He uses a spanner so as to secure the bolts that are screwed on a steam pump. This picture illustrate the daily routine of a factory worker. This picture is a demonstration of a pure strength. The man looks more like a greek statue than a factory worker. In 1920, woman could work in factories. We can see here that working in a factory, in a man’s job. This picture illustrates all the stereotypes that we can have about man and his strength.
Finally, the last document is a poster encouraging women to work in factories during the WWII. The woman in the poster is really beautiful, feminine and glamorous. She doesn’t really correspond to the image of a factory worker. She has make up on her face, a headscarf to protect her hair and she is got gloves to protect her hands or nails. She looks like a typical pin u girl and yet she is doing a man’s job, using a drill in a steel. The poster shows that she can perfectly do his job just
