What’s the meaning behind the notion of Idea of Progress ?
First, Progress is a steady evolution towards a better stage. It is thus the idea that the world can become a better place in terms of technology, politics or medicine. Progress is defined as any kind of improvement.
In order to illustrate this notion I will deal with sport activism, that’s to say how can athletes, using their passions, have an impact on social issues ?
In a first part, we will see what the society has to deal with, then how some people brave those concerns and to conclude, are those people a goof figure to fight these ?
Since the dawn of time, different societies have experienced both violent and passive discrimination. And all of those kind of discriminations are du to some part of the society that are judged different, by their colors, their origins, their caste in india for exemple, also their sexual orientation, or because of their physical characteristic.
Racial segregation is one of the proofs. We can use afro american in example. They were restricted of circumscribed areas, institutions (like school, churches, hospitals, restaurants, restrooms, playgorunds...), and they were beaten when they didn’t respect the laws which were made especially to put them aside. Moreover, Gay people were hunted since a very long time. During the 20th century, and before, homosexuality was frowned upon even then. People crually punished gay people, by scarifying them, or even killing them like nazis did. Not only gay but also impaired people suffered from it too.
To fight this, nowadays and some time before, personalities like rosa park, have been able to rebel against the system. After those precursor, a bunch of activist came, in every categories. Especially in sport, many athletes raised up against inequalities.
Colin kaepernick is an african american quarterback from san francisco team.On august 26, 2016 during a game he refused to get up for the american anthem. Through this gesture he denounced the police violence against the african american and the systematic acquittal of the police officers who are the authors, It is a revolutionary act since he took along his activism on the ground whereas American regard the sporting enclosures as neutral spaces. He was joined by a growing number of athletes through the country. Seth DeValve, a Cleveland Brown player became the first white football player to do it after Kaepernic, and even more came defend the cause. Moreover others athletes raised up again others inequalities like sexisme in sport, Naomi Osaka, Ibtihaj Muhammad and others women that succeed in sport were fighting to prove that women can also play in a egal category with men.
