Places and Forms of Power
I’m going to present the notion “Places and Forms of Power”. Power can be defined as the capacity or ability to control others and to make things happen despite obstacles, resistance or opposition. There is different type of power, it can be the executive power, the power of the press…, but it also can be places like castles or schools and universities because as Mandela said, “education is the most powerful weapon”. In this notion I will talk about the Higher Education in UK and in US. In these countries the cost of university is expensive. So, what can students do to cope with unaffordable tuition fees? I will first deal with to talk about the tuitions fees, secondly about the disagreement between people about that and finally the solution for students.
Firstly, education tuitions fees in USA and UK are really high so everybody can’t go to university. Then in two documents about the England named “Here’s why university tuition fees will probably go up in 2017” and a video, we saw that fees have gone up. In October 2010, the English Government voted a new law which gives to universities the right to raise their tuition fees, at the students’ expense. The fees will charge more than 9000 pounds. To them this swelling is in link with their desire to improve Higher Education. The more students pay the better education they get so this appreciation is justified. We saw in some testimony like “Delphina’s testimony” or “Annabelle Rosario’s testimony” that when you want to go to university you can't imagine the money which represent tuition fees because it's very high so you go to university and after you pay frequently for the rest of your life. We know that in USA the middle classes can't keep going when the cost of universities is approximatively about of 26 thousand dollars. We saw the power of degree, because have a degree is really important since it could help to earn a decent living, be more powerful and lead a happier life, so have a good job and eventually have more responsibilities. Also, you will have a better luck to have a better paid job. This is the reason why everyone wants to go to university even if people get a debt for many years. So, the access to university is really hard for many people, it's an instrument of power.
Secondly, we saw that the point of view about the fees is share. In a document “for or against the rise of tuition fees”, We have 2 points of views: firstly, Emily, to her mind, degrees will become a status symbol, students will get the feeling of buying their degrees, so they may be judged by their wealth not by their skills, their hard work and commitment. On the contrary, other students, James are in favour of the rise of tuition fees. To his mind this may help reduce the deficit. After, with the extra money of tuition fees the UK has produced some of the world's best universities and so it has to maintain a good standard of education as consequence degree will more value. These 2 points of views shows the power of the money because degree will be accessible just for person who can pay universities’ tuition fees. More you have money, more you can go in the best universities, more you will have power. After in a document named “student discontent” we can see many students who protest the rise of universities tuition fees. The scene take place on the streets of London on September four years ago. According to them, the cost of education is far too expensive. For most of them higher education not accessible to everyone, people can't always pay. So we can see the power of degree, because students protest a lot, students are really motivated, we can see a lot of passion. Degree is really important for students, it represents for them a lot of power, the fact to have studied, the fact to have been in college. It's also a satisfaction personal really high.
