Opinion Essay

The main caracter of the book „Ceremony“ is Tayo. He spent his last few years in war and finally he was released from the hospital and able to go home. But the war has not been easy on Tayo and has left him with some issues, but Tayo still tries to remain himself.

Tayo does not really like confrontation. He usually does what people expect from him and tries not to get into any fights. He is a nice man that followes the rules and knows when he needs to be quiet. Like when auntie treated him much worse that his cousin Rocky he never complained, he just accepted it because he did not want to confront anyone in case it would just make things worse. Of course there is one exception: Emo. But even with Emo, a man who is really mean to him and despises him because of the skin colour, Tayo had a lot of patience. He tried to ignore him to not get into a fight, until it just was too much and Tayo lost controll.

With the loss Tayo had to experiece, we could see how much he cares about the people close to him. He may not always have gotten the best treatment as a child but he still had people who were close to him and who he loved. Two of them were defenetly Josiah and Rocky. These two unfortunately died, one of them even in front of his own eyes. These deaths left Tayo wounded and made his situation even worse than it was anyways. You could see that Tayo cared deeply about them and the people that are close to him.

As mentioned before in Tayos childhood he was not always treated like the others and as a result he has been struggling with himself. His skin colour has an effect on the people in his home. People are either ashamed of him or they are judgin him, even though it is not his fault and he can do nothing about it. His skin colour may even be an insecurity of him. When he got treated worse than the other children he was maybe even ashamed of himself.

Some of Tayos charactertraits can be followed back to his childhood or the war. He has been through a lot and these things have formed him to the man he is now.
