Notion: Spaces and exchanges

I'm going to present you the notion of "space and exchange". First of all, I’m going to give a definition. The notion of space and exchanges is a broad concept that relates to the movement from one place to another. All societies are somehow defined by the geographical and symbolic spaces they occupy and how they open up these spaces. But now I’m going to develop the case of Mexican immigration to the US and the student's migration within Europe. We can wonder how these example define this notion? First I’d like to mention the human side of migration, and then I will talk about the Erasmus program. Finally, I will talk about the cultural side.

To start, migration is not a new phenomenon: people have always migrated. But since the beginning of the 20th century, migration has been on the increase. People migrate for different reasons like the wars, conflicts, persecution, poverty which forces people to leave their home. We studied a document about a Mexican immigrant which had to go to the US because he has debts and he lived in dire straits with his family in a deprived neighborhood.

Indeed, migrants encounter difficulties because they risk their life to cross the American border, especially that the US authorities have built a wall and a surveillance system to deter migrants. They must to play smugglers to sneak across the border. They must face the difficulties of integration because in US they must to find a place to live and a job to survive and help their families which are stayed and being undocumented they don’t have rights.

On the other hand, in another domain, some European students wanting to study in others country take part in the Erasmus Program which is the European Union’s educational exchange program. Over two and a half million students have benefited of Erasmus since his creation. So, Contrary to the US authorities, the Europeans encourages the mobility within Europe. For example, students with financial problems for accommodation can receive financial aid.

Finally, there is cultural side in migration because integrated migrants allow a culture mixture. We studied an ad on which the captions are in English and in Spanish. It shows that Hispanic culture has an influence on American culture and this is beneficial to American culture.

In parallel, the Erasmus program allows Students to thrive abroad, to improve their linguistics skills, to discover new people, to be more open minded.

As a conclusion we can say that the notion of "Space and exchanges" is a very large notion which could contain better exchanges than other. But in exchanges between different spaces there are always a good side like ERASMUS and another less well, like the Mexicans case.
