telecommuting
intro
(to begin, to introduce)
-First, we can say that telecommuting mean working from a place which is not an office. In most cases, telecommuting refers to people who are working from home. More and more person are concerned by this new way of working, there are 1.3 million of home workers in the U.K
- Through years telecommuting became a lot more common, and if British Telecom was one of the pioneers, a lot of companies offer to employees to work from home nowadays.
- Telecommuting represent an important progress for a lot of employees. We can define progress as the fact of believing that the world can become better thanks to art, science, technology and quality of life.
To what extent is telecommuting a good alternative to traditional office work?
We are first going to see the advantages then we’ll see the drawbacks.
advantages
- The most obvious advantage of telecommuting is surely the fact of working at home. There is no need for a car and so no money spent in gas and no time lost in traffic jam. So the home worker is gaining time, energy and money.
- Then, we also can say that by working at home there is a lot less pressure on the employee. As the article of the Time, published on 2012, explains the flexibility and the possibility to set their own schedules make remote workers a lot more productive compare to those who are working in a traditional office.
- Working at home also offer the possibility to parents to be more present in their kid’s life. Because they have more free time they don’t have to choose between their family and their career.
Drawbacks
- Even if telecommuting seems to be the solution of a lot of overwhelmed employees, it is important to consider that it doesn’t suit to all sectors and to everyone.
- It might be hard for some remote workers to keep a clear barrier between personal and professional life. For example, it’s hard to work when kids are home and to stay focused. Or, on the contrary, it may be hard to work all alone, without anyone to talk to. For example, it was the case in the document “Does it suit everyone?” that was about a graphic designer that can’t handle the fact of being at home everyday anymore because she was getting bored and she was missing her colleagues.
- Working from home require a strong mind and to be very determined. As we said earlier, employees may feel exclude and isolated. But moreover it may be an obstacle on their career because they are more unlikely to be promoted by not working in the heart of the company.
conclusion
(to sum up)
- Telecommuting may be seen as a revolutionary way of working, for woman who wants to keep family on an equal footing with work or simply for employees who feel more comfortable working at home than in a traditional office.
- It’s also an advantage for the society because, by working from home, people can live anywhere and it can lead them to more rural and quiet cities. So it may be better for everyone.
- But its also important to consider who hard it can be for employee to adapt themselves to work from home, and loneliness can’t be good for everyone. And over the feeling of not being apart a group anymore, the carrier of remote worker can suffer from it.
