IDEA OF PROGRESS

INTRO

  • définir la notion :
  • I am going to talk about the notion idea of progress. To begin with, I would like to
  • state a definition of progress. The idea of progress can be defined as
  • an improvement, a development or a change. It can be a technical, scientific or
  • social advance which contributes to making the world a better place.
  • lien entre le thème et la notion :
  • Global warming is the consequence of gas emissions which are the result of the
  • human activity with industrialization. As a result consequence serious problems can
  • be observed such as the ice cap melting, the rising of the sea levels, the depletion of
  • resources.
  •    •        problématique :
  • Related to this notion we can wonder how to deal with climate change.
  • annonce du plan :

First we will see ‘’ that there is positive effects and that we can deal with climate change ’’ and then we will see ‘’ that however there exist some limits at it’’ . To answer this question, we are going to use 3 documents : a visual document composed of two pictures, a video of Leonardo Di Caprio talking about the climate change issue in front of a UNO assembly and finally texts who give us evidence of the global warming issue and its consequence.

DEVELOPPEMENT

I. Firstly we can deal with climate change. In fact people ought to ask themselves more often about what should be done in order to avoid the rising of sea level for example —> it’s the first document , on the picture who shows people gathering on an island to form the question : « The End ? » The second picture of my first document shows a polar bear drinking a blue cocktail and wearing Hawaiian shorts. He’s holding a sign which is asking « what about Kyoto ? » In the background there is the Canadian parliament. In the foreground, the focus is on made by Greenpeace.

1 —> def of Kyoto protocol : the kyoto protocol was signed in 1997 in Japan by 38 industrial countries committed to take decisions in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Canada was involved but they decided to retire in 2011 because they were unable to reduce the gas so they had to play penalties.

2 —> def of Greenpeace : it’s an organization whose aim is to take actions to preserve earth and nature. They organize awareness campaigns (demonstrations, marches etc)

3 —> def of IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) : it was created in 1988 and it was a demand by US president and UK price minister of that time. They wanted this commission to search and report to the society about global warming. It is composed of scientists from all over the world.

What’s more it is the first time the IPCC proposes a solution —> we need to use renewable energies by at least 70%. And experimental plants in Island for instance show that we can recycle or transform gas into zone.

Besides in the second document that I present today the issue implies several levers and celebrities who are involved and then use their fame to respond to the problems.

Indeed the second document is a video. In 2016, the famous actor Leonardo Di Caprio talked about the climate change issue in front of a UNO assembly.
