Myths and Heroes

(Introduction)

I’m going to talk about the notion « myths and heroes ». People often consider heroes by what they see in movies with super powers like superman for example. But a “myth” can be defined as a story about gods or heroes, it can be a popular belief or a tradition or a false notion. A “hero” can be a mythological figure, a person who is admired for his or her achievements, a superhero or maybe a role model or an icon. According to this definition ordinary people can become heroes. How can an ordinary person make the world a better place? How do heroes influence today’s society? Why do we need heroes?

In a first part, I shall develop ordinary persons who became heroes and how did they get there, then, in the second part I will talk about the importance for a society have ordinary people who are heroes.

  1. (Ordinary people can become heroes)

I think that anyone can become a hero thanks to our actions, our way of thinking. We saw many different people who became heroes in English class. The story which is for me the most touching is the Malala one. Malala is a Pakistani activist for education and the youngest ever Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Since a very young age, she wants that all the girls can have an education. But in 2012, Malala boarded her school bus in Pakistani district of Swat; a Taliban gunman asked for her by name, then pointed a pistol at her and fires three shots. She survived and has continued to speak out on importance of education. In 2013 she published her first book, I am Malala, and one year after at the age of 17 became the youngest to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo. She is an example, a heroine, a spokesman girls who don’t have an education, and she is determined to speak up for girls right education. But Malala isn’t the only one to have heroic actions, indeed in class we saw the CNN heroes.

So CNN Heroes is a ceremony broadcasted on CNN which is an American news channel. It’s with an audience and people are given awards for their achievements. Their missions vary greatly: to provide loving homes for orphaned children, feed those in crisis or protecting the environment for example...Yet they all share one goal: to improve the lives of those around them. Such as Chad Pregracke focuses on the Mississippi River with thousands of volunteers to clean up the river. He gathers people to defend environment. In 2013 he received the award the best hero of the year and he won 100.000 dollars for his association.

Malala and Chad Pregracke are examples ordinary people who are become heroes. They made a good thing for the education, preserving the planet and protecting the environment. But why the society needs different heroes. Do they have a big impact on society?

  1. (Why do we need heroes?)

We love great survival stories because they give us hope. They help us to realize we are not alone that others have experienced similar challenges and if they can make it through, then surely we can too. The story of Oscar Pistorius given hope to people with disabilities and help to make disability a positive image. Indeed, Oscar Pistorius endured the amputation of both legs when a child but still became highly active in sports. He took up running at age 16; he had captured gold at the 2004 Athens Paralympics. And in 2012 he competing both in the able-bodied and Paralympics. He is the first amputee to compete in track events at the Olympics. So Pistorius captured the world's attention and imagination, he inspirited for many global icon.

We need also someone known around the world to transmit strong message to emulate their example of courage and resilience. Beyonce is an American singer, is one of the most famous and influential women on the planet. Thanks to her influence she gets messages across to millions of people. For example Survivor Foundation is an Organization she founded to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. She is also determined to defend women and girls to education, to health and justice. She comforted and encouraged many people to help other.

So Pistorius and Beyonce are influence on many people, they show us how to transform our life. They give us confidence in ourselves. We want to do everything to look like them. Even if sometimes heroes disappoint us.

(Conclusion)

So, I would like to end by saying that a hero is someone who maintains the hope of a better world, by her/his achievements, her/his way of thinking. But everyone can be the hero of someone. A hero can be an ordinary person like me or you. No need to have super power muscles to be a hero. I strongly believe that we need heroes for inspiration in order to forge our personality.
