Myths and heroes

In order to illustrate the notion « Myths and heroes ». I have chosen to talk about two documents. The first one is an extract from the film “PHILADELPHIA”. The extract from the movie which deals with Andrew’s portrait. The second one is a cartoon entitled “A long walk to freedom”. The extract about a Nelson Mandela.

I will present these two documents and show how they are related to the notion.

In the first extract, Andrew is a lawyer. He is in the hospital with patient who has aids. They are a lot of visible signs of the disease on their faces and Andrew is scared as he realizes he will become like them so it will be difficult to hide his disease to his boss. Andrew is a hard-working lawyer who is reliable person and is greatly appreciated by everybody in the firm. Andrew gets a promotion. Andrew’s boss gives him an important and difficult case. One day, Andrew’ boss fired him because he have lost an important case. Andrew thinks that he was not fired for the case but because he had aids and he is gay. He is determined to fight for his rights, to struggle against discrimination. Andrew is a hero for the gay community. He is a type of man who defined the notion of hero. Indeed, Andrew is seen as a hero for his courage to fight the disease. His family supports him.

Now, I’m going to talk to my second extract.

A cartoon showing Nelson Mandela in his early years. He is attending school. To the question “What will I be?” He was written various ideas: lawyer, activist, freedom fighter… In fact, Nelson Mandela fulfilled all his roles during his life. He was a man of conviction and achievement: He builds the rainbow nation. He was a brave, bold, courageous, president who worked for peace. He can be seen as a hero by million minorities who fight for justice and equal rights. Nelson Mandela is seen as one hero because he put ends of Apartheid. Today, it’s difficult for black and white people to live together in harmony because of anger and grudge. The apartheid is not very disappearing. In South Africa. Nelson Mandela is a hero because he is courageous and admired for this fight by a million a people in the world.

As a general conclusion, these two documents show two various heroes: One hero is admired by million people in the world and the others are a hero for this family and this friend. It is a same hero because they go at the end of their ideas. They fighting.
