Many poets find their skill in using subtle words to describe the physical and emotional aspect of a human being, or life surrounding him without telling the reader bluntly what the speaker is thinking or what his personality really is like. In Robert Browning’s My last Duchess as well as in Eliot’s The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, both writers use that skill tremendously well as we are drawn to uncover the speakers’ personality and temperament through their common speech. In the case of Browning, the Duke’s temperament is omnipresent throughout the poem as he criticizes his duchess and her kind nature. Browning does not mention the Duke being unsatisfied with his wife, yet his opinion and the way he describes his wife shows that he is jealous of her promiscuous kindness. In the case of Eliot’s Love Song, the author is just as subtle with the temperament of the speaker as he too sheds light on the speaker’s character as he demonstrates his tormented life due to the passage of time.
Firstly, in Thomas Stearns Eliot’s poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, the dramatic speaker’s temperament and character are revealed throughout the poem with his obsession with the concept of time.
