How does the writer reflect on the painful experience of hybridity in this extract?

This extract is about Mr. Watts telling his painful story to a group of people. Mr. Watts lives with his black wife in a village in Guinea and he is the last white man. Their daughter is the result of their hybridity and he is very proud of her. Matilda a little girl identifies through the story of Mr. Watts and reflects on her own hybridity. She may be carrying traces of her dad.

Mr. Watts does not know his parents; he grew up as an orphan boy which was not easy for him. He never had someone he could rely on. He did not know his origins until he became an adult and started to learn thing about his identity. Growing up without knowing how your parents look like or even where do they come from must have not been easy for him.
Mr. Watts married Grace a black woman from New Zealand. They both have completely different cultures; one is white and has Anglo origins whereas the other is black and lives on an island near New Zealand. They settled where grace live a small village. They couple is not well seen because society does not like white people mixing with black people. But over the years Mr. Watts gained the respect of his village due to his knowledge of the world. Mr. Watts and Grace made a child named Sarah she is the result of a mix of two cultures. He was so proud of her and almost discovered his parents faces trough his daughter’s. Unfortunately, his daughter died from a disease which was a very difficult experience for him, she was the only one in which he could identify his origins and his parents. She represented and she was the perfect mix of their hybridity.

This story made Matilda reflect on her own hybridity after listening to Mr. Watts story. Matilda is a very mature and open-minded little girl. She listened to Mr. Watts story because she respects him.
Like Sarah Matilda tries to see if she has traces of her father on her face. Since she does not have a mirror, she can only touch her face and guess, for example she guesses that her dad had a rubbery mouth. After touching and guessing what her dad look liked she realizes that his dad is not lost. Mr. Watts story encouraged her to fin out things about her identity, she identified herself through his story. But Matilda goes even beyond that and she thinks that she may be carrying traces of her dad inside her, in her heart, in her mind. She thinks hybridity goes beyond physical likeness, people carry traces of their ancestors inside them. Matilda’s story is beautiful because even though her dad left her, she is proud to keep and carry physical but also traces of him inside her. And she is willing to sacrifice those physical likeness for the hope that he has not forgotten her.

Mr. Watts grew up alone and he has been cut off from his parents and his origins very young. While telling his story he explores different difficulties of living with a hybrid culture. The most painful experience for him remains the death of his daughter in which he recognized his parents face.
Whereas Matilda feels encouraged to know if she is carrying traces of her dad. For her hybridity is not a problem on the contrary she is hopeful that with her physical likeness her dad will not forget her
