Halloween

Halloween is originally a celtic festival called « Samhain » When people used to set bonfires white wearing costumes and doing rituals. The word halloween comes from the expression « All hallows Eve » . It is celebrated on the 31th octobers. The day after is the « All Saints day » , a cristian celebration. In the 8th century . Pape gregory the third decided to integrate the folkloric tradition oh Hallowen to the Cristian religion. Halloween arrived in the USA thanks to the seltters (mainty irish) who immigrated from the UK to the US.

There are traditions such as « Trick or treat » wich consist in children dressed like monsters or ghosts ringing at some houses doors and giving choice to the people between candies or a speel. The symbol of Halloween is the pumpkin used as a lantern. It comes from the legend of jack’s O’ lantern. Stingy jack people usually tell eatchother horror stories during Halloween which black cats, ghosts, skeletons, vampires, witches, haunted mansions graveyards etc.…

- Stingy : someone who is not generous and wants to keep his money for himself.

- To bother someone : to annoy someone

- To trick someone : to trap someone , to make someone fall into a trap

- To claim something : to demand something

- To pass Away : to die

- To toss someone something : to throw something to someone

- Coal : black pieces after a fire

- Doomed to : destined to

- To carve out something : to sculpt something

- A turnip : The vegetable on the right-hand side
