This work of art was created in response to the bombing of Guernica by the German and Italian air force, at the request of the Spanish nationalist forces, on 26 April 1937, during the Spanish Civil War.

Picasso submitted it to the International Exhibition of Arts and Techniques in Modern Life at the Universal Exhibition of 1937 in Paris.

Today, Guernica is exposed in Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid. Picasso’s goal, with this large mural, was to draw the attention of the whole world to the bombing of the Basque city of Guernica by the German bombers, who supported General Franco’s nationalist forces during the Spanish Civil War.
