Why should historical heritage be valued?

Heritage is a property that is or may be inherited. In this case, Historic heritage are places of significance to people because of historical, physically (technological, archaeological, architectural) and cultural values.

Categories: - monuments, building

                   - sights

   material   -landscapes

                   -artworks (literature/painting/cinema)

The most famous archaeological heritage in UK are Stonehenge and Avebury, they were accepted as worldwide heritage by UNESCO

The flag or the national hymn are cultural heritage.

But there is other type of heritage like the English breakfast.

We are going to talk about the English breakfast also known as the fry up

It consists of toasts, bacon, eggs, sausages, grilled tomatoes, grilled mushrooms, baked beans and sometimes black or white pudding it’s accompanied by tea or coffee.

Why and for whom it’s a piece of heritage?

It’s a heritage for the people of Britain who have grown up with this habit. They continue to perpetuate it because they like it as it is.

History:

The traditional English breakfast is a national institution. The full English breakfast consists of eggs (fried or scrambled), sausages, back bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, fried bread, hash brown (pan fried shred potato) and often a slice of white or black pudding. It is also accompanied by coffee or tea. There are many versions of this breakfast. For example, the Scottish breakfast boasts a tattie scone (potato scone), the Cornish breakfast often comes with Cornish hog’s pudding and the Welsh breakfast features laverbread.

 

The tradition of breakfast dates to the Middle Ages. At this time, it was served mid or late morning and was composed of just ale and bread, with perhaps some cheese, cold meat or dripping.

A breakfast was often served on weddings. A wedding mass had to take place before noon, so all weddings took place in the mornings. The first meal the new bride and groom ate together would therefore be breakfast and became known as the wedding breakfast

At the Georgian and the Victorian period, the breakfast had become important.

 

In despite of his traditional reputation the full English breakfast is a recently invention. During centuries the English peoples only ate porridge, bread, meat (if they were rich), and beer (the water wasn’t drinkable) for the breakfast. It’s only during the 19th century, when the first cooking book appeared, and the industrial revolution was important, that the substantial breakfast (with eggs or fish) became attractive- and necessary for those who has a manual job.

For the fry up like we know it today, it was truly popularized in the 1960s with the increase of the tourism in Great Britain. It became the standard breakfast in the Bed & Breakfast at this time.
