Each country possesses its own culture and history, but Britain is one of those countries with a globally admired and unique heritage which includes British literature, theatre, art and institutions, which are influential and respected worldwide. The first two extracts from literature are from “Two Lives” and “Challenges” (2005) by Seth, which tells the story about a boy arriving at his new British school. The second document is a scene 6, Act 1, of a play called "Educating Rita". In this scene, the main character Rita went to see a play "Macbeth", a conversation about it started with her tutor. The final document is a speech by JK Rowling to Harvard students. During this essay I will be elaborating these subjects of British heritage further and how the following examples are significant to Great British History.
Britain has many myths, authors and world-famous universities. For example, we can see in the extract from Educating Rita, in which Rita has just come from the theatre from seeing Macbeth and expressed her moral reaction to her tutor after discovering this tragedy by Shakespeare. She bought the book which also quotes the play: “Out, out, brief candle ...” which refers to the life of his dying wife. Shakespeare speaks not only of Lady Macbeth's life, but also of ours. Its myths have an overall compass of reactions and its purpose is to inspire and guide those who read history. This quote appears to really inspire Rita who is a simple-minded girl looking at her accent: "me seat", "an" "," y "". Willy Russell presents Shakespeare's pieces as universal; Shakespeare’s literature reaches to a wide audience which makes him a part of Great British history.
JK Rowling's speech is inspirational for the younger generation who wants to follow Rita’s footsteps to do what she thinks is best for her. From her speech to Harvard University students, Cambridge USA, she stated that she didn’t have much family support: "I was looking for a difficult balance between the ambition that I had for myself and what the closest of me expected of me”. By sharing her story, she expressed the difficulty of persuading parents to allow their children to make their own decisions, which applies to the whole global population. JK Rowling is a huge world known figure and role model within British literature.
JK Rowling refers to Seth’s novels “Two Lives” and “Challenges” in regards to the student whose desire was to apply to Oxford. The university specifically requires for the applicant to have studied an additional language alongside their indigenous language which is Indian. Although he was an exceptional student, unfortunately the university declined this application: "no exemption / exemption would be granted". Even though many people have desires to be a part of British history by attending this university, the challenge of acceptance from this prestigious university is comprehensible, even though they weren’t accepted at Oxford, doesn’t mean their values are demined as there are plenty other high rated universities across the country. Even though doesn’t originate in Britain, within his novels about his experience of being declined from a top-class British university for not having that requirement of an additional language, there are other
