Re-read the text and answer the following questions :

1) Imagine Jacob’ life in Russia ans the various reasons why he decided to emigrate to the USA ?

Jacob had to flee Russia because of religious persecutions. He is a Jew and was shot by the Cossacks because of his beliefs. He choosed to come in America to find a shelter.

2) How does Jacob feel throughout the text ? Why ? Justify your answer.

Jacob is very scared because he doesn’t want to go back to Russia. He lies a lot. « No. I mean, yes » l.34

3) Describe and analyse Dr. Carl Traver’s attitude towards Jacob. Justify your answer.

Dr. Carl Traver was a turning point in the story. His atittude towards Jacob is nicer thanthe one of  the first doctor, he is described as a nice and young doctor wich means that he was probably more comprehensive than the first doctor because young people are more open-minded.

4) How do you explain that he eventually lets him pass ?

The Doctor Carl Traver’s understands Jacob situation and know that Russia isn’t for him. He also sees that Jacob is a very intelligent man so he lets him have a chance in the USA.

Jacob’s English is a bit faulty. Put the following sentences into corrrect English :

6) « I tell truth. Hunting accident in Russia. I healthy. Look : feel muscle. Strong ! Healthy ! See ? » l.37 I’m telling the truth. I had an hunting accident in Russia. I am healthy. Look : you can feel the muscle. I am strong ! I am healthy ! You see ?

He began to sweat (transpirer). The wound (blessure) from Cossack’s bullet (balle) had long since healed(guérir) but sometimes it ached (faire souffrir) a bit.

Use the context to translate the following sentences and find their opposites in the text.
