Nowadays in the USA, the doll business gets bigger and bigger every year. In this country, the consummation society is very present. People are used to buy a lot and consume more than they should or they need. The concept we’ve studied is the American doll. It is a doll that looks like the little girl who owns it. In this commentary we are going to see how American Doll became a huge success, and then in a second time, we will enumerate the limits of this concept.
The American doll was created in the 1930's during the great depression. First, there was a series of books telling each doll's story, and then, dolls were crated. Thanks to books that came out before the American dolls, little girls already knew it. So they wanted it and asked their mother to buy it. And as the USA is a consummation society, mothers weren’t against buying one. This factor is probably one of those which made American doll a big success. Even though it’s expansive, some little girls have many dolls.
The books are mostly the first books to be independently read. The goal of the author trough the dolls books, was to say to young girls to hang on to their passion or, whatever they're interested in. With this kind of speech, it motivated many young girls to read those books to stay a young girl who dreams and become adults the latest as possible.
Young girls enter into a world but can lock their self-inside of it if they play with their doll too much. Because of this, some little American girls owning those kinds of dolls become selfish, unsociable and don’t stay kids longer but keep their mind in their world. So they are disconnected from the real world, even kids world. Moreover, the doll must not be mistake with a real friend as Kelly (the girl in the video does). That kind of fact can disturb, few years after their social relations.
Eventually, the doll isn’t given. One doll costs a hundred dollar, which is a lot for a toy destined to young kids. So this product is very promising but can’t be sold to everybody.
This kind of product can be compared to dress stuff, like shoes or t-shirts that you can personalize.
It shows that we live in a world were being unique has become a usual thing. So companies are arguing on the fact that if you custom your product you won’t have similar persons. In reality everybody can custom his stuff, so we’re all similar.
