Sam Cooke de son vrai nom Samuel Cook est né au Mississippi dans une famille de huit enfants. Il s'intéresse très jeune à la musique et au chant. Fils d’un pasteur, il a chanté au sein d’une chorale religieuse. Le groupe The Singing Children est fondé par lui, trois de ses frères et l'une de ses sœurs. Il ira ensuite rejoindre le groupe de gospel Highway QC's.

Sam Cooke of his real name Samuel Cook was born in Mississippi in a family of eight children. He is very young interested in music and singing. Son of a pastor, he sang in a religious choir. The Singing Children is founded by him, three of his brothers and one of his sisters. He will then join the gospel group Highway QC’s.

Son charisme et son talent ne laissent personne indifférents, et c'est à seulement 19 ans que le fameux groupe des Soul Stirrers le recrute. Mais la collaboration artistique prend fin lorsque Sam Cooke, qui souhaite conquérir un plus large public que la seule communauté croyante afro-américaine ses aspirations sont pourtant incompatibles avec les normes de l'époque ; non seulement Sam est noir, mais il est surtout hors de question d’abandonner le gospel et la relation à Dieu qu'il entretient en tant que membre de la très croyante communauté afro-américaine. Il enregistre alors son premier single solo avec le label Art Rupe en 1956 sous un faux nom Dale Cooke.il fut vite démasqué .Plus que le mensonge, c'est la sonorité pop du morceau qui crée la polémique. Sam Cooke quitte donc les Soul Stirrers pour rejoindre le label Keen avec qui il produit quatre albums. Il devient alors le chanteur R&B incontournable du moment avec ses titres "You Send Me", "Only Sixteen", "Crazy she calls me", "For Sentimental Reasons", et bien sûr le mythique "Wonderful World".

Sam Cooke leaves the Soul Stirrers to join the Keen label with which he produces four albums. EN 1960 pour plus de liberté, Sam Cooke rejoint ensuite RCA Records. Il va enfin trouver son blues, ce style indissociable de l'artiste. Le chanteur, par sa communion avec le public et son énergie, il pose les fondations d'un nouveau genre dont la création lui sera attribué : la soul.
