What are the similarities and differences between the civil rights movement and the BLM movement today?

Let's start by defining civil rights :

The civil rights movement was organized by black Americans to end racial discrimination and achieve equal rights under the law. It started in the late forties and ended in the late sixties. While risky at times, the movement was mostly nonviolent and resulted in laws to protect the constitutional rights of every American, regardless of color, race, sex or national origin.

That's when the fight begins,

In nineteen hundred and forty-eight (1948), President Harry Truman issued the executive order to end segregation in the armed forces.

But also on January ten and eleven nineteen hundred and fifty-seven (10-11 january 1957) , sixty black pastors and civil rights leaders from several southern states - including Martin Luther King, gathered in Atlanta, Georgia, to coordinate non-violent protests against racial discrimination and the segregation.

That's not all, on August 28 nineteen hundred and sixty three (1963), About two hundred and fifty thousand people participated in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom with an activist: Clayborne Carson. Martin Luther King gives his “I Have A Dream” speech as the closing address in front of the Lincoln Memorial, stating, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed'. Countless numbers of people traveled to attend the speech.

Since nineteen hundred and sixty-five (1965), there have been demonstrations in more than one hundred cities.

Now let's talk about the black lives matter movement which complements civil rights :

Before being a movement, Black Lives Matter was a hashtag used on social media. For two thousand and thirteen (2013), the movement has not ceased to be used.

For two years, the African-American community used the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter, even becoming a slogan during protests in Ferguson following the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner

This movement reflects civil rights. This BLM movement is like the legacy of the Black Panthers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King

It is worn by men, women, mainly young people.

The difference is that this movement took advantage of social networks and used it as a weapon

The wins for the moment were :

  • Twenty four states have signed laws to improve police accountability.

  • Obama has put in place executive measures to combat police brutality.
