Part 1 :

  1. The three situations in which Hélène needs to speak in English are :
  • When she is in a visit with an American and/or a British group visitors.
  • When she gives visit for many different nationalities.
  • When she prepare her presentation.

  1. How does Hélène prepare her presentation?
  • If she knows the site, she don’t have  much research about that but she have to find out as much as she can about the group for adapt of her presentation and their level of interest
  • If she not familiar with the site, she prepare her presentation in many ways as she wrote in French. First step, she collect many information as she can in English if it’s possible. She sorts the information and she eliminate what it is not important. Finally, she prepare a series of notes.
  • When she presents somewhere for the first time in English, she practise with her friends.
  • If she needs to use new, technical words, she try to find out what they should be pronounces.
  1. For their first presentation in English, Hélène advices:
  • To prepare the presentation in the way has just describe.
  • To make a series of note but don’t tried out the all presentation.
  • Not to read the paper, it’s unprofessional.
  • That the English we use that be fairly, simple and clear and your note should be concise
  • Not to learn the useless details like the technical words or huge list of the architectural of the site…

Part 2:

  1. Greet the group : “Good Morning Everyone”
  2. Introduce yourself : “I’m your guide for this morning visit / My Name’s Hélène and I’m your guide”
  3. Say what you are going to show your group: “This morning, we are going to visit the ground and the interior of the château.”
  4. Ask people to do something (directing people): “If you’d like to follow me, we can start the visit.”
  5. Attract people’s attention to something: “Other there, we can see nineteen century landscape garden”
  6. Indicate exactly where something is: “If you look down there by the river, just next to the wall of the chateau, you can see the remain of the fish tank.”

Part 3:

First e-mail :

“Bonjour Jean-Pascal,

Claire m’a appelé pour remplacer un guide lors d’une visite d’un château vendredi prochain mais je ne serais pas disponible.

C’est une visite du Château d’Azay-Le-Rideau pour un groupe de 28 élèves anglais âgé d’environ 17 ans. Ils arrivent le matin à 10h. Il faudra présenter l’histoire du château, de la construction au 19ème siècle jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Bien évidemment, il faudra parler de la hauteur du château, de ses grands escaliers et de l’influence de la renaissance italienne. Il faudra aussi dire quelques mots sur le sol et le site en lui-même. La présentation doit durer à peu près 1 heure. Je m’adresse à toi car je sais que tu es un expert en château donc serais-tu disponible pour cette visite?

Thanks you for the proposition but I am sorry I am not available next Friday for medical reasons. But I send an email to my colleague Jean-Pascal explaining to him all the details you gave me. He replied positively and he is very happy and motivate to make this visit. He is an expert in Château so the visit can be great with him. I am so sorry and I think Jean-Pascal is the most appropriate person for this visit.
