Idea of Progress

    Nowadays technology is omnipresent in our lifes. But the scientists claim that technological devices can have negative aspects / consequences on users.

That’s why technology can have positive and negative aspects, and we can wonder if we could live without technology ?

To answer this question, we are going to begin by studing the drawbacks and dangers of technological devices, then we will see if an alternative is possible.

    Let’s speak about the actual technology.

    Firstly, the danger is that we depend on technology. In fact, we studied the blackout in San Diego in 2011. This unusual experience shows that we can’t work without technology, we are paniced and the city is in the chaos (with huge gridlocks for example). We can add that in 2010, an experience consisted in deleting the tehnological devices of a few students of Portland’s High School during days. The majority of these students was anxious to miss something important, getting bored, and missed Internet and social metworks. So today technology is necessary, for the life of cities and in the life of people.

    Moreover, technology can become dangerous because we can lose control. We studied a novel published in 1950 and written by Mr Asimov ; the story deals with a robot, which takes care of the children of a man. But can we really trust in robots, and is it normal that they take our place ? We also watched a video where a robot is out of control ; he can kill people, and have dreams and feelings. So we can clearly see with these stories that technology could become dangerous and that we could lose control.

    However an alternative is possible : a « Tech-Less World ».

    If fact, we studied some experiences and testimonies, which show that it is possible to live without it. For example, we saw the testimony of a man who lives 4 weeks without technology. At the beginning it has been difficult to change his habits, and he was torn apart without Internet. But after the 4 weeks this man found a peace of mind and wanted to stay like that (without Internet and technological devices).

    Moreover we have studied the trailer of the film « Into the Wild ». The hero shows that it is important to live fully and to search for ourselves, and that it is impossible with Internet and technology. To finish, we can add that a few student of Portland’s High School shaked off their habits after the experience (in 2010). They said that they were « eyed-opened » after their experience.

    To conclude, we can say that technology can be dangerous and we depend on that. But we can live without if we make a big effort and if we try to change our habits.

    In the future, it could be interesting to organize more events to see if people can live without and how long.
