Amish People and Amish Culture
This Website is not maintained or created by the Amish themselves but by people who are directly in contact with them. The goal of this website is dismissing the misinformation.
The Amish are Community who lives in Lancaster country and have a special lifestyle. They live with a lot of special rules and principles, their lives are a lot different from us. First at all they live separate from the world and with humility and speak Pennsylvania Dutch, which is a dialect of German. But when children go to school, they learn English. They live in humility from birth to dead (they are equal).
One mark of humility is their wearing wo all are modest. Woman and girls are all wearing the same modest clothes and hairstyle, the only difference is on their prayer covering color which is white if they are married und black if they are single. Wearing jewels is also forbidden.
The man and boys wearing dark-colored suits. The only difference is the beards. Indeed, they grow beards after they marry, the beards are the mark of an adult Amishman and allowed because there are a few scriptures mentions beards in the Bible. But moustaches are forbidden (symbol of military). The black hat is too a symbol: one’s age and status are often reflected by the dimensions of one’s hat.
The Amish life is conforming to the Bible, they don’t have electricity (because easy access to it could lead to many temptations and the deterioration of church and family life) and are self-sufficiency. Indeed, have the Amish farm for feeding livestock and marketing. They don’t have electricity but use alternate sources of power like gas power. So, they can use modern equipment, for example modern barn-cleaning equipment for milk their cows.
Indeed, are Amish people not oppose to modern method like modern medicine and doctors but can deliver the babies at home, it is a matter of preference. For the baby are the most common first names for males: John, Amos, Samuel, Daniel, and David and for females: Mary, Rebecca, Sarah, Katie, and Annie.”
Parents can play with children for example during the holidays which are the religious holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas, Good Friday, Easter, Ascension Day, Pentecost, and White Monday but not playing music and children’s dolls have no face.
They don’t have outsides influences and live separate from the world. Consequently, the Amish wo are self-employed don’t pay social security tax but they pay real estate, state and federal income taxes, county taxes, sales tax, etc.
But in reality, they don’t live really alone the influx of tourism as something they cannot change.
