A better health for a better life

JOURNALIST : Hello ! Welcome to the radio program A better health for a better life on the radio station J and N. Today, we’re going to talk about obesity in the world and particularly in America. First, I am going to tell you some bearigns. According to the Health Organization, one in three people in the world is overweight, and one in ten is obese. By 2015, it would be 2.3 billion overweight people. In Amercia, about 67 is the percentage of Americans who are categoried as overweight or obese. The fattestAmercian state is Mississippi. Indeed, about 34 per cent of adults are obese in these state. Our first guest is a nutritionist doctor. He comes from a fat camp in Pennsylvania and he is going to explain what these camps are, and what their goals are.

Hello Mr. Richardson, can you tell me what is a fat camp?

DOCTOR : Hmm, a fat camp is a camp where young obese people can learn how to lose weight. In fact, we concentrate on « obesity rehab ». To my mind, it is a very good solution for teenagers who are overweight because our weight loss programs can really work.

JOURNALIST : And, what are exactly these programs, and your main goals ?

DOCTOR : Hmm, our main objectives are to make young obese people move and eat right. They participate in aerobics class and our cognitive behavioral therapy, teaches kids to control their behaviour. It is very efficient. Indeed, most of the children continue to lose weight after their return home.

JOURNALIST : I have got an other question. How long does a stay in a fat camp last and how much does it cost?

DOCTOR : It depends of the camps, but the camp where I have been working, Wellspring Academy, charges $6250 per month, with kids staying for up to six month.

JOURNALIST : Oh ! It’s very expensive!

DOCTOR : Yes, I know the trouble is that not everyone can afford camps like this.

JOUNALIST : Right. Thank you very much Mr. Richardson. Good bye !

Two weeks ago, I went to a fat camp near Seattle to meet a young obese teenager called Julia and a sociologist who has been carrying out a study on obesity and its factors.

[ Sounds of people walking and children shouting. ]

JOURNALIST: Hello Julia! How are you?

JULIA: Fine, thanks, but a bit tired! I had been running for half an hour this morning!

JOURNALIST: Wow! Right, now I’m going to ask you some question… First, how old are you?

JULIA: I’m eleven.

JOURNALIST: And, do you enjoy your stay in the camp, are the sport teachers and your friends nice?

JULIA: Oh, yes, I really enjoy myself here! The sport lessons are very funny, and the teachers are really nice with us, even if they are sometimes a bit strict with food… But I know it is for my health… My friends… Hmm, I have got three good friends here, but some children are not very gentle with each other. Everyone is overweight here, but some children are still making fun of the more overweight kids…

JOURNALIST:
