Environmental Sociology Assignment 3
Environmental Sociology Assignment 3: Find and Review Environmental Sociology Article
Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment is for students to gain experience searching for, reading, and reviewing empirical research articles in the field of environmental sociology. This exercise will provide valuable experience that will be useful in future situations where it is necessary to survey existing research.
Directions:
This assignment involves finding and reviewing a research article from a peer-reviewed, sociology journal. You are free to select any article you like, so long as it was published within the past five years, pertains to environmental sociology, and is not one of the assigned readings for this or any other course (in other words, the process of searching for and finding the article is an important part of this experience). Some suggested journals include:
American Journal of Sociology
American Sociological Review
Environment and Behavior
Social Forces
Once you select an article, you should read it and respond to the following items:
1. Identify the journal name, year of publication, article title, and author(s) of the article.
2. Search for a web page, curriculum vita, or other biographical information (hint: most
faculty have links to their c.v. on their university web page) from one of the authors, and identify the following:
a. What do they identify as their areas of research interest/expertise?
b. Have they published other work in the field of environmental sociology? c. Do their qualifications suggest they are an expert in this area?
3. What was the research question(s) and/or hypothesis(es) set forth by the author(s)?
4. What methods did they employ in their research (e.g., quantitative, qualitative, other?)
5. Did they collect their own data, or use secondary data?
6. What were the findings of the article?
7. Does reading the findings raise any additional questions in your mind?
The assignment should adhere to the following formatting/content requirements:
Double space, using a standard 12-point font, with 1-inch margins on each side
Each question should be addressed using full sentences, in paragraph format (no bullet
points)
As a general guide, the assignment should be at least 800 words, however it will be
graded based on how well the questions are addressed
