I will talk about the notion of spaces and exchanges. A possible definition of this notion is the deals with the geographical and symbolic areas that all societies occupy and the interactions between men and different societies. I think this notion is very present today in our life, because this world is moving all the time and really quickly. All technologies, like Internet, make that we exchange information and values, more and more. But not only, have people travelled all the time. We are able to share our culture with everybody. First, I will talk about globalization, which has the most important impact in our life.
How exchanges in this modern world contribute to evolution of our society ?
Our world is built on the exploration and conquest of new spaces. The different cultural, economic, sociological and language interactions have shaped and characterised our modern-day world. The english culture dominate the world with cinema industry, the music… and nowadays, if you want to succeed internationnaly, you need to speak english, like the young indian, she will have to get familial with the australian accent and take a new name to work in a thelephony company.
Immigration to USA belongs to five hundred years ago, with Christopher Columbus. Then, time passed and American dream is still current. Now, more people go to America for work, it calls the « brain drain ». Also, this immigration contributes to a cultural mixture. But we must notice the reverse brain drain, that actually evoluate e-every day. Like the young entrepeneurs in India live their country to study in the best university of the world and when they have finished their studies, they come back in india to find some work and help their country to developp. Today, there are more and more gap year, that is students who are going to other countries for learn a new language and see an other culture. Me, my dream is to go to New York for doing a year during my studies. I think it’s very important to discover other countries, peoples, cultures, usual …
One of the major developments in the most recent years is the Internet and the different social networks like Facebook, Twitter or Skype. This is a new way to communicate today. These networks make it easier for us to stay in touch with friends and family abroad, they open up borders and enable us to communicate with people abroad. However there are also disadvantages to this fast development of internet: there is a lot of false information available, people can become addicted and spend less time with friends and family, more, a recent study show that facebook can make you unhappy, because of the different photo of your friends… I understand exactly what does it mains, because I’m young and in the hearth of that.
To conclude, I think that exchanges are become very important in this world, always in movements. Little by little, with the globalization, we can see borders disappear. Spaces become one world because all spaces need to others countries for live.
To illustrate this, I have chosen 3 documents.
If we look at the power of the media for example we can see how much it can influence the public opinion. The mass media plays an important role in forming our personality, enriching our knowledge, providing us with information of any kind.
Mass media can have an effect on our personal identity: it can help us to feel that we are part of a group (social networks) but on the other hand it can contribute to a feeling of isolation.
Media can have a strong political influence or can shape the way we perceive certain groups of society – minority groups, pressure groups…mass media is powerful because it makes us believe what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour (reality TV).
However it can also have harmful impact on society:
– On-screen violence leading to actual violence (violent video games/films)
– Identity or financial fraud on the internet people to fraud, especially identity fraud.
– the dangers for children who are able to access Internet material inappropriate for their age.
– The Internet can facilitate an invasion of privacy – (chat rooms, social networks, bullying)
I’m going to talk about places and forms of power. Places and forms of power are many in our lives, but I chose to talk about the power of the press and about the CCTV cameras. This theme can illustrate the problematic “How press and surveillance
