Ladies and gentlemen,

I would first like to thank you for coming and welcome you in this gathering. Im sure you all heard about Hawaii but not for the same reason as I did, maybe you or someone you know went for vacation there. They’re are indeed magestic islands .

But if I’m reaching out to you today , It’s because we need your help, and sponsorship.

Im here speaking on the behalf of the Kanaka maoli’s population , the native population of hawaii. My name i( .. ) , and I have been volunteering in Hawaii since now a couple of years . As I was warmly welcomed among them, I started gradually to fit in, and people finally trusted me enough to talk to me about their issues.

Among other problems, I found out, that a significant part of the population is suffering from substance use and mental health disorders . : Native Hawaiians exceed any other ethnic group in the state for use of marijuana (8%), crystal

methamphetamine (1.3%), hallucinogens (1.7%) and heroin/opiates (2.1%).

Plus , Arrest rates for drug manufacturing or sales are higher among Native Hawaiians than any other ethnic group.

As a result : By 12th grade, that is senior year, 60% of Hawaiian students have used drugs, compared to 46% state wide.

As for the mental health issues : there’s a lack of available data but The Salvation Army’s Women’s Way, a residential program in Honolulu offering alcohol and other drug treatment for pregnant and parenting women and their children, reports that over the past five years, 55-60% of all admissions have been Native Hawaiian ; PTSD and depression are common among, these women, who also report a high incidence of physical and sexual abuse and domestic violence.

It must be remembered that Native Hawaiians compose approximately only 20% of the State of Hawaii’s population.

As all colonized peoples, Native Hawaiians and their culture have been overwhelmed and minimized by Western cultural beliefs and practices.

The near exclusivity of using Western approaches for treating disorders creates a belief that the Native Hawaiian way of healing or recovery is unacceptable .This approach reinforces the loss of cultural identity, and perpetuates the belief that Native Hawaiian treatment practices, values and beliefs areto be ignored. Subsequently the message becomes, to achieve health, one must leave behind thinking, being and acting “Hawaiian” to a more Western style of thinking and behavior.

To help defeat and overcome those issues , several parterneship were made in order to :

• Improve our understanding of specific cultural practices that improve treatment outcomes for Native Hawaiians with co-occurring disorders.

• Improve data collection and analysis of culturally appropriate treatment for thos hawaiins

But again to carry out those project we need your help, all sponsorship proposals will be studied and are encouraged .

several measures could and will hopefully thanks to your help be taken in order to :

• Develop
