Children are exposed to constant advertising outside and inside their school, because even if the school doesn't allow companies to advertise their products within the school’s premises, the children are exposed to ads constantly in school: in the hallways you can see walking brands, everywhere on their clothes, on their backpacks, on their materials…
We can’t forget that the children are also exposed to constant ads in their own houses: on the refrigerator magnets, the bottles on the table at dinnertime, the products on the bathroom.... they're everywhere.
Commercial advertising prevents the school to accomplish their fundamental mission: making the children to think independently. Children are already surrounded by near-constant advertising that promotes materialism. But the omnipresence of commercialism is not a reason for allowing school advertising. In fact, children need a place where they can focus on learning. And it should be the school.
It’s a way for schools to make money as they face deep budget cuts or tax increases. School can see a lot of income generated by ads.
We are exposed to ads unconsciously. So why the school doesn’t take advantage of this easy way of making money?
It's not an obligation; it's an advice for the schools, a possible funding method.
Schools shouldn’t think so much about it... they have two options: earning money by putting ads or having to face teachers’ layoffs.
Schools need to find another method to make money because putting the children on sale isn't the right way to solve the economic problem. Parents don't pay for their children to be commercially exploded; they pay for them to be educated.
In fact, it is shown by the consumer group “Commercial Alert” that schools' advertising programs fail to satisfy their objective of generating significant revenue.
And ads are for the public, teachers don't teach the kids to buy the promoted products and the children don't even pay a lot of attention. Besides, people get used to it, just as they get used to it on their houses or outside their houses.
Advertising is a big distraction in school, an institute where the children are learning and the teachers are working, and both of them need to be concentrated.
When the children get out of school, when they walk on the streets, they are always exposed to constant ads. And there are “harmful” ads of junk food for example, so what does it matter if they are in school too?
Besides, the ads in school are never about politics, cigarettes, or alcohol.
The school is powerful in the mind of a child, they obey advertisement. And it's a risk because ads are harmful sometimes, like for example ads of junk food.
