According to the dictionary definition a myth is a traditional story, concerning the early history of people or explaining a natural or social phenomenon, and typically involving supernatural beings or events. Then a hero is. a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.
To illustrate the notion of « myths and heroes » I'm going to present two characters considered as hero Pope Francis and Malala Yousafzai.
Ever since Pope Francis became the leader of the Catholic Church last year, he has been showered with attention for how much his leadership has changed perceptions of the institution. His acts of humility, his simple lifestyle and his welcoming ways have dramatically altered the Church's image in a radically short period of time. Just one year into his papacy, books have already been written celebrating his leadership style. Time Magazine named him Person of the Year .
The Pope tells us to put joy into action, in service to the poor, love of the sick, going out to meet our brothers and sisters at the crossroads and bringing them home. He personally and infectiously shows us exactly how it's done.
Jaws dropped around the world when the pope said, "Who am I to judge a gay person of goodwill who seeks the Lord?" in response to a question about the Catholic Church's attitude towards gays and lesbians throughout history. He's continued to make statements that amount to a shift in tone for the Vatican, saying in an interview that the church has been too "obsessed" with homosexuality and abortion and should focus more on being a "home for all."
A pretty cool graffiti of Pope Francis as "Super Pope" has earned the Vatican's approval. Francis, who became the head of the Catholic church in March, has won over almost everyone at this point.
Then, I’m going to talk about a young Pakistani girl shot for her outspoken campaign involving women's education has quickly become a global phenomenon. A symbol for the fight against injustice and terrorism, Malala Yousafzai has inspired people across continents to join in on a learning revolution which could change the lives of millions.
Malala Yousafzai is a hero and excellent role model to all people. She is an activist for education and for women's rights which are incredibly important. She is a hero because she fights for her rights and the rights of others with extreme opposition from her country. She has faced adversity and challenged society to get her voice heard.
Having tea with the Queen, chatting with President Obama in the Oval Office and being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, Malala's recognition in the West continues to grow.
In conclusion, when we are small we believe that heroes are the ones you see in cartoons where people who save the lives of others. But when we become bigger we understand that a hero is much more than that, this is a person who is giving up to make a difference. A person who believed in change. In my opinion, a hero can be anyone, a person who helps a homeless in the street, who gives money to associations and also firefighters and doctors.
