1.        GENERAL

1.1        Description of Work

Design and installation of an AquaMist FOG high pressure water mist system to protect         Machinery Spaces as manufactured by Tyco Fire Protection Products.

        Drawings.

The contract drawings indicate the general arrangements of the areas to receive water mist         protection. The Contractor is to review all drawings so that all items affecting the operation of the         water mist system are considered in the design of the system.

1.2        Mist Extinguishing Principle

The water mist system shall be capable of producing fine water droplets with a large surface         area. On contact with flames, these water droplets vaporize, removing heat energy from the fire.

The mechanisms by which the discharge acts to extinguish a Class B fire normally involve a         combination of the following factors:

  1. Heat extraction from the fire as water is converted into vapor and the fuel is cooled.
  2. Dilution of flammable vapors by the entrainment of water vapor, to such an extent that the resultant mixture of vapor will not burn.
  3. Cooling of liquid hydrocarbon fuels below vaporization temperature, to such an extent that the vapor will not burn.

1.3        Requirements

The Fire performance criteria of the system shall be designed and made in strict accordance with         the applicable design standards detailed below.

The system shall be designed and installed by an approved contractor who is suitably qualified         and certified to design water mist systems. The designer/installer shall be an approved certified         distributor of the original equipment manufacturer.

        The system shall be pre-engineered.

        CONTRACTOR DETAILS

1.4        General

  1. Provide all engineering design and materials for a complete water mist suppression system, including, but not limited too; water cylinders, Nitrogen cylinders, release components, discharge nozzles and all other equipment necessary for a complete operational system.
  2. Major system components will be produced by Tyco Fire Protection Products (no alternatives) and will be installed by DISTRIBUTOR.

1.5        Submittal

        The following shall be submitted for approval on award, and prior to delivery of materials.         Material         and equipment information will include data sheets for each component or device used in the         system. This will include, but not be limited to, the following;

  1. Water cylinders
  2. Nitrogen cylinders
  3. Release components
  4. Discharge Nozzles
  5. Distribution pipework
  6. Distribution installation and fabrication drawings

Provide information outlining the operation and maintenance procedures that will be required         of the owner. This information will explain any special knowledge or tools the owner will be         required to employ, and all spare parts that should be readily available.

Drawings will include location details and operation details of all equipment associated with the         water mist system. Floor plans will be provided showing equipment locations, piping and other         details as required. Floor plans will be drawn to a scale of not less than 1.50. Elevations, cross         sections and other details will be drawn to scale as required. Isometric pipe work layouts will be         provided.

Sequence of operation, electrical schematics and connection diagrams will be provided to         completely describe the operation of the water mist system controls.

2.        SYSTEM DESIGN

2.1        Summary

  1. The high pressure water mist system shall be suitable to protect Class B flammable liquid hazards in machinery spaces, insulated and non-insulated combustion turbine enclosures, and incidental flammable liquid storage. The machinery space application includes rooms with machinery such as oil pumps, oil tanks, fuel filters, generators, transformer vaults, gear boxes, drive shafts, lubrication skids, diesel engine drive generators, and other similar machinery.
  2. The high pressure water mist system shall be of total-flooding type.
  3. The high pressure water mist system shall be fire tested within compartmentalized areas and found effective for the suppression of a wide variety of exposed and shielded Class B hydrocarbon pool, spray, and gravity fires with door openings up to 2.88m2 as defined in FM5560.
  4. The high pressure water mist system shall be a fully automatic or manual total flooding fire extinguishing system. Supplied system shall consist of:
  1. Water Storage cylinders.
  2. Nitrogen cylinders.
  3. Actuation system.
  4. Discharge nozzles.
  5. Pipe network, fittings
  1. The high pressure water mist system shall be designed to function automatically upon activation by an external detection system.

2.2        Applicable Standards

The high pressure water mist system shall be designed, inspected, tested and maintained in         accordance with the below standards.
