III. Introduction
Service learning is a way to extend our academic learning and go beyond it by putting into practice what we learned in theory and in class into a real-life problem in order to meet community need as a way to develop civic responsibility and put our knowledge into practice.
In this service learning project, we are required to do an energy audit of a chosen community building. But first, let us go into more details as to what is and what is energy audit.
Energy audit is the analysis and assessment of energy flow for energy conservation in a chosen building. It is used to determine why, where and when the energy in that building is used in order to do a general assessment and come up with ways, we can improve the efficiency. In better words, energy audit ‘s main purpose is to identify and analyze all the energy flow in the building, then try to generate a set of alternatives that could help maximize the efficiency and reduce the energy consumption of the entire building.
Our main goal is trying to spot opportunities in which we can save energy by reducing the consumption and the same time, keep the same output or almost the same output. After talking to the CEO of ANETRA Mr. Moulay Smail Abdellaoui, he showed us a big interest in the work we want to do since it is going to cut some financial and utility expanses, not matter how big or small amount of potential money that could be saved after finding solutions to minimize the energy consumption since the company is a private company and the offices work 8 hours a day.
We will try to come up with more than one alternative and then do a financial analysis of these solutions in order to choose the best alternative with better outcomes.
IV. 1-state of art:
In order to work on present a good service learning project, we followed the steps bellow:
1. First, we make a list of potential buildings that we can base our projects on.
2. Choose the site of which we can access data easily in order to run a smooth project
3. Set a timeline by which we should divide the load of work as well as set an outline to better structure our project
4. Contact the person that will give us the clearance to work on their place and start gathering the necessary data
5. Analyze energy consumption
6. Calculate the energy cost of the whole building
7. Compare the building’s energy use from different period of times and also with other similar institutions
8. Prepare a list of all energy consuming units in the company and measure their consumption
9. Measure potential energy and cost savings
10. Report back to Mr. Moulay Smail Abdellaoui about the energy audit findings and the potential alternatives to be implemented
V. Engineering application:
A- Energy Study:
ANETRA’s headquarter is located in the center of Khenifra, it is made of three buildings, the first is for offices while the second and the third one are warehouses. In this project, we will only analyze the first building (including the parking lot), since it is the one in which energy is consumed the most. This building is made of six offices and one general meeting room, all of them are in the ground floor. Working hours are specified in 8 hours per day.
B-data analysis:
To know the price of every KWh of electricity, we visited the website of
ONEE, the following is a table showing the price per amount consumed:
the building is consuming more than 500 KWh per month, so the price for every KWh is 1.5958 Dh.
1-lightening:
So, the total amount of money paid for lightening per month is 336.4 mad.
2- Heaters:
In the winter, the building uses four electrical heater with the following specifications:
The heaters work eight hours a day; So, the monthly cost of the electrical heaters is = 1800/1000 *8*1.6* 30*4= 2764.8 mad.
3- Coolers:
In the summer, the building uses two air conditioners:
so, the total
