I-What is Environmental Management System?

Definition:

The environmental management system is a framework that helps a company to achieve its environment goals with a control of its operations. This control will improve the environmental performance of the company. EMS has no standards or criteria to respect, each company has a level of EMS to reach, it depends on the company and its objectives.

The objectives of EMS:

The goals of EMS are to increase compliance and reduce waste by:

- Setting environmental objectives for reducing the environmental impacts and comply with legal requirements

- Implementing a program to achieve the objectives

- Monitoring and measuring progress in achieving the objectives

- Ensuring employee awareness and increasing involvement in business

The main objective of the environmental management system is to making improvements.

The five main stages of an EMS, as defined by the ISO 14001 standard, are:

1- Commitment and policy→ 2- Planning → 3- Implementation → 4- Evaluation → 5- Review

II-What are ISO 14000 and EMAS?

Definition:

ISO 14000 is a series of environmental management standards developed and published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for organizations. The ISO 14000 standards provide a guideline or framework for organizations that need to systematize and improve their environmental management efforts. Specific procedures must be followed to ensure the quality of the implementation, continuous improvement of environmental performance and monitoring of the environmental management system.

The standard most used in this series (ISO 14000) is the ISO 14001 standard. ISO 14001 is about environmental management
