Documentaire sur la mondialisation et les affaires internationales (document en anglais)

This document is a documentary about Globalisation and International Business presented by Johan Norberg.

This documentary is divided in three parts: The first part is about Taiwan to see how globalisation leads to wealth and democracy, then about Vietnam to see what multinationals are really doing to developping countries and finally it deals with Kenya to find out why African countries are still so desperatly poor.

Thirty years ago, people in China were poorer than many Africans today, malnutrition was widespread and they were no natural ressources today, they are as reach as the Spanish taiwanese poverty was cut by more than a half. This miracle happened because the country embraced capitalism and globalisation. In the 1950ies, the governement began buying lands from the old elite and giving it to the population. In the 1960ies, the government pushed for industrialization and encourage people to build their own factories or at least work in manufactoring. Then, they started selling their products to the rest of the world which led to the China's richness.

Vietnam was recently one of the poorest nations in the world. The majority of the population still lives off the lands. We can still find multinational in Vietnam. A lot of the population works in the sweatshops. Globalisation doesn't guarantee a smooth life but offers long-term benefits. People in Vietnam were offered a chance to stop working in the fields for thirteen or fourteen hours a day and to work in a clean environnement with a regular wage. Factories start to spread through out the country, the « race for labour » has already started. In fifteen years the Vietnamese economy has doubled and people living in absolute poverty has halfed.

Kenya, East africa. Just fifty years ago, Taiwan was just as poor. Most Kenyan farmers are still poor because the Kenyan governement has never given them property rights whereas in Taiwan, giving people their own lands was the first step to industrialization. No one can build their own buisnesses so capitalism can't take root.

I believe this documentary is really biased, it only shows us the good aspects of globalisation without showing us any of the drawbacks such as global warming, the fact that capitalism is not reliable and that it increases the Notrh/South divide
