How does the development of motorized transportation affect domestic and international trade ? To what extend is it compatible with sustainable development ?
A car culture is arising in China. We are going to write the consequences in the country’s domestic trade first and then how it affects international trade.
The development of highways leads to a greater equality between big cities and countryside , thus increases wealth in remote areas. The car boom has affected the domestic business . Middle class people can now drive to large supermarkets where they choose between many kinds of Chinese or foreign goods. They now shop less frequently but purchase more at a time.
Besides they are able to buy products other than fuel in petrol stations nowadays . On the other hand it changes the economics of the retail sector which will have to adapt.
Foreign companies settle in China. Car manufacturers have rebounded from the slump thanks to China which is the largest car market in the world, and the figures keep increasing. Other companies like big-box French Carrefour S.A or the American Home Depot Inc. regularly open new outlets. There is no policy which prevents foreign companies from penetrating the Chinese market so new companies may open markets in China.
Nevertheless mass production is not easily compatible with sustainable development. And, as it is briefly written in the text, the car culture has largely negative consequences on account of the increase of pollution and road congestion.
