Mariano Rajoy

Who is Mariano Rajoy ?

He is the current prime minister of Spain since 21 december 2011. He belongs to the People’s party which he was the leader since 2004. He held various minister under the previous prime minister José Maria Aznar. Minister of Public Administration from 1996 to 1999 and Minister of Education from 1999 to 2000; he served as Deputy Prime Minister from 2000 to 2003. Rajoy led the People's Party into the March 2004 general election, but that election was won by the opposition Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) in the aftermath of the 2004 Madrid train bombings.

He uses the website of the PP, He lectures which is relayed by radio and television.

Analysis of the political landscape

The Spanish landscape of the EU Profiler contains eleven political parties with a relevant

representation in the Spanish and European Parliaments, or with a significant prospect of

national vote share according to the most recent opinion polls. At first glance it is very

significant to see that almost all parties are quite spread but still located around the upperleft quadrant of the political spectrum. This means that, apart from significant differences in

their manifestos and ideological platforms, the core of the competition for the 2009 elections

to the European Parliament will take place on the socio-economic left-wing and pro European side of the spectrum.

Concerning the elections in Spain, There are four types of elections in Spain: general elections, elections to the legislatures of the autonomous communities, local elections and elections to the European Parliament. General elections and elections to the legislatures of the autonomous communities are called after the mandate of the national or regional legislature expires, usually four years after the last election, although early elections may occur.

Corruption Scandal

The former treasurer of Spain’s governing Popular Party, attempting to get the Spanish to accept unprecedented austerity, has dragged his party into a corruption scandal.Press reports accuse Luis Barcenas of collecting money from companies and distributing it to leading party members over 20 years.

Current leader Mariano Rajoy ended the practice in 2009. Barcenas along with several unnamed other people was reported two days ago to hold a secret Swiss bank account worth 22 million euros.
