Purchasing activities
Objectives
1. Support organizational goals
➢ Align purchasing goals with the company’s ones (organize smaller and more frequent deliveries to reduce the amount of stock)
2. Develop integrated strategies that support organizational strategies
➢ Bring an expertise and a source of market intelligence enabling to:
• Monitor supply market and identify the main suppliers
• Monitor emerging trends, material price changes, new products
• Identify new materials needed to support strategies
• Develop alternative sources
• Support the company’s needs for a diverse and globally competitive supply base
3. Support operational requirements
➢ Ensure a uninterrupted supply of materials components r services
• Right sources, price, specifications, quantity, time, place
➢ Provide a good service to its internal costumers to avoid lose of confidence
4. Use their resources efficiently (limited resources)
➢ Determinate the appropriate staffing levels needed
➢ Develop and keep within budgets
➢ Provide training and opportunities to employees
➢ Monitor performance and look for improvements
5. Manage properly the supply base
➢ Ensure that current suppliers are competitive
➢ Improve and develop existing suppliers
➢ Identify new suppliers which can provide good service or might enter in the supply base
6. Develop strong relationships with other functions
➢ Avoid the silo effect (each function works independently)
Responsibilities
➢ Evaluate and select suppliers → sourcing
➢ Review and challenge specifications provided by users
➢ Be the primary contact with suppliers
➢ Decide how to purchase (bidding, single sourcing…)
➢ Reduce costs
