Idea of progress.

I’m going to talk about the idea of progress .

Like Charles Murray says: “We need once again to embrace the idea of progress—the idea that history has a direction, the idea that human action has been, and is, making the world a better place."

So, we may wonder if the progress is always beneficial.

To my mind, idea of progress consists in believing that the world can become better in terms of art, science, technology, liberty and quality of life. That is, people can become happier in terms of quality of life (social progress) through economic development (modernization), and the application of science and technology (scientific progress). So I'll tell you about these three points: the social progress, then the scientific progress, and to finish the globalization and internet which for me characterize the idea of progress.

First of all, for me the idea of progress refers to The evolution of human thought. For example, the evolution of the place of women in the society. In fact, earlier in the olden days, women use to sit at home detached from the outside world. They use to manage home and look after children. With the advent of industrialization and technological development, the lifestyles of human beings started to change. The needs of human beings started to multiply. Women pursued education in equal terms with man. Then, women slowly started to participate in all walks of life, to think independently and participated equally in the outside world. Slowly and steadily discriminating women on the basis of gender diminished, as women won applauds in all the fields of life including politics, sports and even in defense services. I remember of a text from voa news titled Saudi Arabia, quatar, brunei to send women to Olympics who deals with that Mahusin competed for Brunei in the 2010 world Olympic, and she says being the first woman to represent her country is a great honor. And I think that it is a real social progress in the society, even if women are not totally equal as men.

In addition, I think that the idea of progress refers to the scientific progress. In fact, for example, in sport thanks’ to medicine progress, a lot of disable have access to athletic equipment which permit them to practice their sport. For example, Oscar Pistorius can participate to the Olympic this year, thanks’ to his artificial limbs. I think, it is really good progress. However, I think that everybody can’t have access to these treatment and equipment. I remember of a text entitled controversy for Paralympic athletes, which deals with the gap between poor and rich countries during Paralympic games. In fact, I think that someone who come from a developed country receive better equipment than someone who come from a underdeveloped country. It points out the inequalities of chance. For me it’s unfair.

Furthermore, in my view, idea of progress reminds me the globalization and the modernization. IN fact, thanks’ to the globalization, underdeveloped country can emerge. I think particularly in south Africa that just be part of BRICS since 26 March 2013. It permits a real progress and growth for this country. The growth of underdeveloped country is for me a positive aspect of the globalization.

Yet, I think
