The civil war

Hello everyone, today we will introduce you to our works on the movie Civil war.

Plot :

The movie Civil war is a thriller directed by Alex Garland, and released in 2024. The movie deals with the polarization, the racism, and the rise of authoritarian regimes.  The story takes place in the United States, in the near future. During this period, the government has become authoritarian, and the country has fallen into dictatorship.  It's the reason for the witch a violent civil war breaks out between two main camps. Firstly, there are the camps led by the president and the governement, and there are also the camps called “Western forces” led by fews secessionist states notably California and texas who are usually politically opposed). The United States is disastrous : a lot of violence is organized by extremist militias. There are public executions, refugee camps are attacked, and finally, the economic situation is catastrophic.

In this context, a team of photographers decide to go to Washington DC, despite the chaos, with the aim to interview the president before the fall of the city, and to document the events. The plot of the movie is based on this.

Characters :

Lee Smith

Lee Smith is the main character of the movie, she is charismatic and she has natural leadership. She is an experienced war photographer who believes in journalism. She is notably known to capture the reality of conflict, she put herself in danger in the aim to inform people, and to put pressure on the government as was the case during the Vietnam War . She suffers from post traumatic syndrome due to the horror she covered. This may seem anecdotic but the character of lee smith is a reference to Lee Miller, a famous war photographer who captured images in concentration camps during the second world war.

Unnamed character, played by actor Jesse Plemons

This character is an enigmatic soldier, who belongs to the president's camp.  He is cold and unscrupulous. He is someone nationalist and racist, and he does ethnic purification. He executes civilians numerous times.

The president

The president is the symbol of thy authority. He flouts the constitution, notably by completing 3 term, while only 2 term are allowed. He disbanded the fbi, he bombed civilians, he is against the press, he will target journalists several times and he wants to keep power. He can be compared to a fascist dictator.

The team of journalist

The journalist team is led by Lee Smith, and is composed of  journalists who come  from all over the world. There are veterans who have covered many war zones but there are also inexperienced novices. They want to inform people about the reality of the conflict. They denounce abuses and want to protect the rights of civilians.

In the foreground, we can see emblematic elements like the statue of liberty, which underlines the American identity. There is also the hudson river, which has purple and orange colors.  We notice two combat ships which testifies to the military presence.
