aWork atmosphere is often referred to as organizational culture. This is the informal code, or set of norms and values, that exists within an organization. This code influences the interaction of workers, as well as their morale. All organizations have a unique culture that includes basic values influenced by top management. The work atmosphere is impacted by these values and approaches to management and communication, which positively or negatively affects worker motivation.

1. Job Satisfaction

o For most employees, the work atmosphere is closely linked to the level of job satisfaction. Companies that promote healthy communication and interaction usually have more satisfied workers. Dissatisfaction at work usually stems from problems with the workplace and the experiences employees have while there. Organizations that are highly encouraging and supportive typically generate happier, more satisfied employees, which has profound effects on production and results.

Employee Performance

o In direct correlation with job satisfaction, employee performance usually wanes when a workplace culture produces many dissatisfied workers. Workers that are disgruntled or unhappy with the culture at work are less motivated to produce good results. A cumulative effect may occur, as unhappy workers share their displeasure with others, which enhances the feeling of a negative work atmosphere. Employees are people with feelings and emotions. Naturally, employees that are happy with their employer and job are more emotionally equipped to succeed. Employees that dread going to work find it difficult to produce.

Turnover

o Retention is important to organizations. Regular turnover of employees is often the result of a bad work atmosphere. "Dissatisfaction with management, scheduling difficulties and departmental relationships are all contributors to turnover," notes Kate Christmas, R.N., in her Medscape article "How Work Environment Impacts Retention: The Day-to-Day Influence on Retention." Often, it is the best employees that leave a poor workplace first. They become unhappy at the burden of taking on more work and pressure to perform because others do not pull their weight. Turnover creates additional problems by adding to the growing work culture epidemic. As employees come and go, it becomes difficult for workers to make friends and get comfortable.

Customer Service

o Customers also suffer while dealing with inexperienced providers at organizations with high turnover. A positive or negative work atmosphere influences the way employees interact with customers or clients. Unmotivated employees are less likely to take care of an organization's customers.
