1. We define the projects as:
Project 1: Online Six Sigma Training Program
Project 2: Coding Performance Improvement Project
Project 3: Website Redesign Project
Project 4: Wireless Technology Project
Factors that we should take into account in our weighted scoring model include:
The Financial Cost of the project.
Resource Availability and Reliability - the availability and reliability of appropriate resource to
deliver the project within the company or via a third-party supplier. If dealing with a third-party
then the score should also reflect the resource reliability within the supplier company.
The value of any Product Benefit - one-off or ongoing product enhancement.
The value of any Customer Benefit is an enhanced project, improved service provision or
improved performance.
The value of any Financial Benefit to the company.
If the project Delivers Industry Advantage e.g. by delivering a new product or novel solution
which the company can use to financial or marketing benefit.
If the project has a Low risk of disruption to core business – it can be implemented with little
or minimal impact on the current service offering.
Using these criteria we see that project 1 (online Six Sigma Training) has a high financial cost
(lower affordability), low resource concerns (as it is outsourced to a reliable third party
company), delivers ongoing product, customer and financial benefits – delivering an industry
advantage, whilst being low in risk as it is outsourced. The product benefits could reasonably
anticipate being ongoing, substantial and cumulative.

Project 2 (Coding performance) is similarly high cost (lower affordability), will require
significant resource effort, delivers minimal customer benefit but higher product and financial
benefit through efficiency, delivers minimal industry advantage and is low-risk.
Project 3 (website redesign) and project 4 (wireless technology) are similar in nature – smaller
scale, lower cost, lower benefit, some industry advantage in terms of reliability and low-risk.
In this example, project 1 (online Six Sigma training) gives the highest return. Although similar
in profile to project 2 - the fact that project 1 delivery is outsourced to a reliable third party
supplier (minimizing resource concerns) and delivers ongoing substantial product benefits means
that project 1 outscores the (similar in scale) project 2.

2. Planning
In the Work Breakdown Structure, the entire website redesign project is a level 1 activity.
As the focus of the redesigned site should be to better meet the needs of the customer, there will
be considerable focus in scoping the project and developing the project plan (a level 2 activity).
Within this scoping work, there needs to be an understanding of the company’s objectives in
building the site and what information should be covered. There should be feedback from
customers on the surrent site content, what works, what doesn’t work, what is needed, how it
should be structured etc. Consideration should be given to the jpourney of customers as they
move through the site as this will inform how content is structured and how the navigation is
presented. Pulling these together allows us to define the overall requirements of the site and to
consider the site design itself. These elements should be drawn together in a project plan (which
should include a risk assessment)
Within the consideration of the design, some thought needs to be given to the look, feel and tone
of voice of the site (is it authoritative? or friendly and accessible?). Different navigational
approaches should be considered and potentially tested with users to get their input in meeting
the needs of their user journey.
Other level 2 activities involve writing and refining the content, building a template page for
review
