“I have a dream”
Martin Luther King pronounced the famous “I have a dream” speech in 1963 in front of the Lincoln Memories.
Martin Luther King was a talented speaker, an American pastor, activist, humanitarian, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. “I have dream” speech put the civil rights movement into the hearts and minds of Americans.
MLK was very calm and determined when he delivered his speech, solid as a rock!
He begins his speech with the emancipation of the slaves issued by A.L. and later mentions that after being freed from slavery, blacks are still not free. King claims all men were equal, black or white it’s the same. The blacks continued their pursuit of justice and demand their freedom with a sense of urgency. He hope to obtain equality though nonviolent movement, forgetting guns hatred or bitterness.
His voice is a commanding voice, well-practiced in his capacity as a Baptist preacher. He spoke slowly to emphasize his words, like a gospel song! MLK used a powerful, an evocative language to draw emotional connection to his audience.
The intensity of the speech is built though hold statements: he used numerous repetition “I have a dream”,”one hundred years later”, “This is no time”. Step by step, the pace of MLK’s repetition increases till a crescendo. MLK talks to his audience and their personal situations directly. He’s with the people, fully connecting to them with his eyes and delivering a powerful rhythm. He identifies with the audience and shows either he is one of them as that he truly understands them and speaks for them. This speech was moving to tears. MLK uses many extraordinary images. “a sweltering summer of discontent, red hills of Georgia, table of brotherhood”
Amazingly the entire “I have a dream” theme wasn’t in his prepared text, it was spontaneous. He repeated “I have a dream” eight times, his speech really starts to sing. Everyone is moved by the perfect cadence, the imageries, and the power.
