Cyberpoetry
From Emily Dickinson to more recent poets such as Maggie Nelson, poetry has always had
the power to speak to the soul in an incredible way. In times of crisis and when words are lacking,
poetry is still a way to express the inexpressible. But what about cyberpoetry?
Cyberpoetry is a form of poetry that emerged during the 90s which refers to poetry produced
thanks to technologies and poetry related to cyberculture. Cyberpoetry is easily accessible to
everyone, allowing people to escape from the real world instantly. Indeed, thanks to websites like
Vispo, it is possible for anyone to share their feelings with a community of vusers through a screen
and thus express the inexpressible when real words are lacking.
Moreover, there are new forms of cyberpoetry such as holopoetry, a three-dimensional form of
poetry whose meaning can change when looking at it. These new types of poetry are not only based
on words but also on shapes or light, everything that is different from ordinary language, which
allows the poet to express itself and viewers to understand a poem simply by looking at its shape.
The holopoem Taroko Gorge is a good example of this: the poem is a river, it recreates the idea of
perpetual change in nature or even creativity. In that sense, cyberpoetry and especially holopoetry is
a way for the poet to express himself other than with ordinary language, it also creates for the
viewer an escape from the real world: for instance with Taroko Gorge, he can imagine himself
contemplating a canyon.
To sum up, cyberpoetry nowadays allows anyone to express themselves through technology
when words sometimes run out.
