Dublin

Dublin is the capital of Eire and the most populated city of Ireland. In Dublin, we went shopping, did a free discovery of the city and visited the National Museum of Archeology and History. I saw “The taking of Christ”, painted in 1602 by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio who was an Italian painter, made famous by this painting. I also saw “A lady writing a letter with her maid” painted in 1670 by Johannes Vermeer who was one of the principal Dutch painters specialized in genre scenes. And I saw “A family” painted in 1951 in London by Louis Le Brocquy who was an Irish painter. I found this painting very strange and frightened…

Galway

Our first destination was Galway. With Sarah and Cecile, we were hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Jacob and their cute little boy Caleb. Terese Jacob and her husband were very welcoming and kind with us. We did a free “exploration” of the city with our teachers who gave us some explanations. Now I know that during the nineteenth century, Galway was used to food shortages. Between 1816 and 1842, food riots took place in the city and in 1845, the potato crop failed. Galway harbor was an important place during the great famine because lots of ships left Ireland for the New World in this harbor. We passed under the Spanish arch of Galway. This is the old gate of the merchants who arrived. We also saw the St Nicholas collegiate church built in 1320 and which is the largest medieval parish church of Ireland. This church is typical because it has three roofs, in reference to the trinity. I found this town beautiful.
