Henry becomes King after defeating Richard III of York. The Wars of Roses are ended.

Henry married Elizabeth of York , uniting the houses of York and Lancaster.

1487

Henry crushes a revolt by the Earl of Lincoln on behalf of Lambert Simnel, a claimant to the throne.

1491

Henry invades France but at the Treaty of Etaples agrees to withdraw English forces in return for a large sum of money.

1492

Christopher Columbus crosses Atlantic and Lands in Salvador.

1497

John Cabot sails west and discovers New-found-land. He believed it was Asia and claimed it for England.

1501

Catherine of Aragon, daughter of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, marries Prince Arthur.

1502

Prince Arthur dies, and Prince Henry (the future Henry VIII) becomes heir (héritier) to the throne, later marrying Arthur’s widow, Catherine of Aragon.

1503

Margaret, Henry’s daughter marries James IV of Scotland. It gives James’ descendants a claim to the English throne. Death of Elizabeth of York Henry’s wife.

Henry VII dies, at the age of 52.

Guy Fawkes and other Catholic dissidents attempt to blow up King and Parliament in the Gunpowder Plot. They are arrested.

Henry dies of typhoid. His brother, Charles, becomes heir to the throne.

Heretics are burned at the stake (bûcher) for the last time in England.

Princess Elizabeth marries Frederick V, Elector of Palatine. Their descendants in House of Hanover will eventually inherit the British Throne.

Playwright William Shakespeare dies.

The Pilgrim Fathers set sail for America in the Mayflower. They found New Plymouth.

Death of James, aged 58.
