The statue was built to celebrate 100 (one hundred) years of the independence of Brazil in 1822 (one thousand eight hundred and twenty-two) . The first stone was put in 1922 (one thousand nine hundred and twenty-two), but the works began only in 1926 (one thousand nine hundred and twenty-six) and finished in 1931 (one thousand nine hundred and thirty one). During the inaugural ceremony in 1931 (one thousand nine hundred and thirty one), cardinal Dom Sebastio Leme pronounced a speech in which he hoped that the statue of the Christ would be a symbol of evangelization and resumption of the power of the Church in a republican state. The statue of the Christ was renovated in 1980 ( one thousand nine hundred and eighty), on the occasion of the visit of Pope Jean-Paul II. In 2003 (two thousand three) were installed an escalator and a panoramic elevator for facilitate the access.

Description and materials:

The statue of the Christ is directed eastward and, is 38 (thirty-eight) meters high. It is part of three bigger statues of the Christ to the world, with the ones of Vietnam and of Bolivia. She weighs 1145 (one thousand one hundred and forthy-five) tons. His structure is concrete armed and in soapstone, called up stone soap. This rock was chosen for its good resistance in temperature variations. A its base, a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary who celebrates today still marriages and baptisms. The panoramic view is incredible, we can admire all the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Location in the world:

The Christ Redeemer dominates the Rio de Janeiro Bay in Brazil, since the mount Corcovado, high 710 (seven hundred and ten) meters. The access to the statue can be made by the road with a stroll or for the pressed a small train is available to reach the summit.
