1. Find the difference and similatries between the two struggles/leaders.

Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Fought The Same Battle In Different Continents.

Similarities :

- Both of them were black.

- Both of them won Nobel Peace Prizes, had a college degree, and were leaders of the black community. Both fight for what is right.

- They were both non-violent leaders.

-Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela were inspirational symbols for huge freedom struggles happening in both countries.

-They were both influenced by Gandhi.

Difference :

- They lived in different countries, Martin Luther King lived in USA and Mandela lived in South Africa.

- Martin Luther King died in 1968 by an assassins bullet.

- Mandela was a convict in prison for sabotage during Martin Luther King freedom march. 
- Mandela spent 27 years in prison during white racist rule in South Africa, he was released in 1990 and went on to become president and become president.

- Mandela traveled to the United States after he was released, but Martin Luther King was unable to visit South Africa, because the apartheid government refused to give him a visa. 


2. We talked about Jim craw laws. Make some research on that particular point.

The Jim Crow laws were racial segregation laws enacted between 1876 and 1965 in the United States at the state and local level. They mandated de jure racial segregation in all public facilities in Southern states of the former confederacy with, starting in 1890, a «separate but equal» status for African american.

The origin of the phrase "Jim Crow" has often been attributed to "Jump Jim Crow", a song-and-dance caricature of blacks performed by white actor Thomas D. Rice in blackface, which first surfaced in 1832 and was used to satirize Andrew Jackson's populist policies. As a result of Rice's fame, "Jim Crow" had become a pejorative expression meaning "Negro" by 1838. When southern legislatures passed laws of racial segregation – directed against blacks – at the end of the 19th century, these became known as Jim Crow laws.

When did apartheid started and why ?

The Apartheid began in South Africa in order to reduce or limit the rights of the Black people in the country who were more than the whites. It was started by the Afrikaner minority rule and white supremacy in 1948 and ended in 1994 when Nelson Mandela became the first elected democratic president. Apartheid led to violence, long trade and arms embargo and internal resistance in South Africa.
