Présentation de l'œuvre de Banksy " Flower Thrower"

This work of art is entitled « Flower Thrower ». This artwork is a stencil made with spray paint. It was made by Banksy who is a anonymous street artist who started is career in Bristol. He gives a message of peace and solidarity through contemporary art, graffiti. This piece of art was made in 2003 on the wall that separates Palestine and Israel which was build in 2002. The artist said : this wall turns Palestine into the world’s largest open prison. Flower Thrower first appeared on a wall, on the side of garage in Jerusalem. This stencil convey a threatening feeling with the hooded man but also paradoxically a feeling of wonder when we see the bunch of flowers. The main subject is the war between the two countries and the violence that there can be but rather to throw projectiles they must make peace.

Flower Thrower shows a masked Palestinian who might be a protester, throwing a bunch of flowers. The fact that he is hiding his face is remind the story of Banksy who also whishes to preserve his anonymity like many graffiti artists. The facial expression and posture of the man on the mural suggest that there is a  violent intent, it can make us think that he is throwing a projectile but the man is throwing a bunch of flowers which means its title. The bouquet symbolizes, in addition to peace, life, and love can also be associated with the commemoration of lives lost during religious conflicts.  The man and the bunch wrapper are in black and white, but the flower are in color. It draws the eyes to the main subject of the artwork. It’s a way for the street artist to say « spread peace, not war ».

We really appreciate this piece of art because there is a paradox between the attitude of the character who is threatening, aggressive and the nature of his weapon, a symbol of peace and friendship.The intention of the author is to show that the whole world is united against war because terrorist are fighting with weapons, but the population is fighting with bunch of flowers honoring the death of innocent people. 

We like the technique used by Banksy because street art allows everyone to see his artworks and even the most destitute. The message of this work of art still valid nowadays with, for example, the war in Ukraine.
