American Gothics parody
First of all I decided to work on this picture because it directly attracted my attention and intrigued me a lot. So I wanted to look for the meaning and purpose of the author through this parody of American Gothics.
In the foreground, we can see two characters, a man and a woman. These characters seem to have the same faces as those in Grant Wood's painting. But we still note some differences : the author of this parody added a long gray beard to the man and a kind of black hat, then dressed it in a long black jacket, it makes us strongly think of Bin Laden, leader of the Al Qaeda terrorist group. The woman, wears the same apron as on the original painting, but the author has added a black veil. We also note that the author replaced the pitchfork with a kalashnikov. We can therefore think that the author seeks to give a Muslim identity to these characters. We will no longer speak of American Gothics but of Muslim Gothics.
Through this parody, one can think that the author seeks to denounce the terrorist attacks. Moreover, we note the presence of many elements leading us to the attacks of September 11, like the plane in the top left of the picture or the weapon held by the man. We can think that the author wants to show the threat that hovers over the United States. Grant Wood, through his work, showed that the United States should return to simple values and through this parody, the author perhaps wants to show that in developing, the United States has attracted a lot of trouble and many enemies.
Finally, we can also think that through this picture, the author wants to denounce the prejudices that are made on Muslims who are immediately seen as terrorists. This is perhaps the positive aspect of this picture.
