The genesis of a killer behind a carnivorous smile and white teeth. His sophisticated politeness, hides a merciless amoral criminal who does not know neither pity, nor remorse. Indeed, before being arrested in 1980 by Will Graham (the one Hannibal helped establishing the psychological profile of a serialkiller who thought he was the red Dragon), Lecter had time to kill and devour eight people, among whom the musician and the employee of the census whose liver Lecter " ate with some fava beans and a nice Chianti ", leaving only two survivors (one of them is Mason Verger).

Unmasked, Hannibal is arreste), judged and sentenced nine times to life imprisonment. Qualified as pure sociopath, he is interned to the very high-security psychiatric hospital of Baltimore supervised by Doctor Chilton.

Eight years after its confinement, the faculty of analysis of Lecter is requested in Francis Dolarhyde's affair, the " Red Dragon " murderer of two families. He helps the police catching him, but also gives to the murderer, Will Graham's address. The killer visits Graham and inflicts him terrible wounds on the face. It is the plot of the movie "the red dragon" reminding the beginning of crime.

Two years later, Lecter receives a visit from Clarice Starling, student in the training center of FBI. The first contact is rather cold and it is the depart of "the silence of lambs"

However, as one goes along, a complicity is going to be established between two beings so different and nevertheless so similar.

The daughter of senator Martin was kidnapped by " Buffalo Bill ", a crazed killer having already killed five persons. But Hannibal knowing that Buffalo is the murderer allows the police to prevent him from killing her (Bill wants her to finish his suit of woman skin). Hannibal wants a cell with a window, the possibility to see the countryside. Clarice Starling calls Lecter but he is also made an offer by Chilton, that he accepts. Lecter is thus transferred in Memphis where he gives a false name to the senator, then, one evening, escapes from both his guards that he massacres literally (the agent Boyle is clubbed to death before being hung on the bars of Lecter's cell, his stomach opened. The agent Pembry, has no more skin on his face and is put Lecter's clothes instead of his to create a decoy. All this time, Lecter who "wears" Pembry's face is taken in ambulance before disappearing. Some information which he gave Clarice put the young trainee on the right track, and allow her to release senator Martin's dauhter, and to kill " Buffalo Bill ". Lecter is on a run. He travels first of all to the Bahamas where he devours Chilton. Then he leaves and goes to Florence in Italy where he becomes (under the false name of "Doctor Fell") a conservative in a library. But his past catches him up ten years later. A former victim, Mason Verger, a billionaire terribly disfigured by Lecter, plans to trap Hannibal.
