Document 1 depicting Narcissus it is a painting attributed to Caravaggio and painted around 1598, it is kept at the National Gallery of Ancient Art in Rome. It's an oil painting on canvas measuring 110 centimeters by 92 centimeters.
The second depicting document Echo and Narcissus it is a painting by John William Waterhouse, dating from 1903. The painting is in oil on canvas and measures 109.2 centimeters by 189.2 centimeters.
The two paintings represent the mythological character of Narcissus who is in the water.
Narcissus was the son of the nymph when he was born; a soothsayer predicted that he could stay alive until he saw himself. But one day he was cursed by Nemesis for refusing the advances of a woman and saw his reflection in the water of a river he immediately fell in love and began to contemplate him relentlessly. It took root and became the flower that bears its name today. Today, her name has given the adjective narcissistic which is a person in love with herself.
The artist tells the story of Narcissus and Echo by painting Echo while admiring Narcissus as he looks at his reflection with which he fell in love. The artist paints the emotion of the characters to help tell the story of the painting. The expression on Echo's face shows that she wants Narcissus to love her. Narcissus'; gaze shows that he is bewitched by his reflection with which he is in love. The artist also uses light colors to paint the frame of the story. The artist uses realistic forms to better represent the story of Narcissus and Echo.
