The Witch's Daughter

The artwork below is a watercolor painting of Frederick Stuart born in 1842 and died in 1924.

The painting was painted in 1881.

It is a 50 cm by 30 cm watercolor painting. The painting is in the theme of witches but very different from the others that I have seen before because it is very soft and calm thanks to the pastel colors used in this painting.

Now I will describe the work.

It doesn't have a lot of detail and it's very simple.

In the foreground we see a young woman sitting next to an owl on a moon. Thanks to the title we can define that the young woman is a witch, the daughter of a witch more precisely.

The witch is represented very beautiful and sweet. she has blond hair and tie, her face has fine features, a straight nose and small lips. Dressed in a beautiful light green dress.

Next to her is a large owl staring into her eyes. the owl is represented in dark brown colors but always pastel which does not give the effect of a stain on the painting

The background are very pastel pink clouds.

The association of the owl and the figure of the witch enjoyed some success in the 19th century with the romantic appropriation of the figure of the witch.

I chose this painting because the representation of the witch is not stereotyped or she is represented as a very helpful old woman, with a hooked nose with a wart, very thin and with very dark clothes, most of them time with a cap. But at the same time this painting does not defirate not only by this aspect but also with its atmosphere. Although you can find paintings with beautiful witches but they are always in a dark environment, whereas here everything is so soft and soothing that I would never have guessed that the young woman was a witch.
